Glide distance ratio

Glide distance ratio

Postby Vince Hoffart » Wed Mar 29, 2017 9:42 pm

ForeFlight just instituted a Glide Distance ring that needs some info.

Assuming a PA 24-250 at full gross: what is the glide ratio with engine out and prop full out/feathered as much as allowable?

I figured 10:1 but looked up a Mooney F and they have ratios of 10-12:1 and the Comanche was designed after to Mooney....

I'm assuming a 1.5 mile glide per 1000 ft lost in calm wind conservatively.

10:1 should be 1.89 miles per 1000 ft.

Vince,
I had to refresh my memory as well to set up the new FF. There are a couple good articles in the Comanche tips (section 1, pg 20) . You can find those on the ICS home page.

BL: 13:1 w/ gear up and prop set to coarse pitch. 100mph/87 kias optimum (max range) glide speed, give or take a couple for fuel weight. Those are -250 numbers. Other models are slightly different.
