I have the stock Piper ammeter and I'd like to replace it with a new ammeter / volt meter that is certificated primary. However, In looking closer I've realized that the stock ammeter is not a standard 2.25" instrument as I think this picture will illustrate (sorry it's a little crooked):
I'll take it out and measure it but does anyone know off hand what size hole this stock ammeter goes into? My current guess is a 2" hole. The ammeter appears to insert into the panel from the front and the bezel of the gauge is wider than the hole so the gauge inserts from the front until the bezel meets the panel. Then there is a retaining bracket that goes on the back side with two nuts. So as the pic above shows the red line (which is 2.25") extends beyond the edges of even the bezel and since the bezel itself has to be larger than the hole it goes in, I am guessing it's a 2" hole. I also note that the standard four corners mounting screws are missing and I don't think there's any way I can get a new 2.25" instrument in that hole.
I have some other ideas but my question here is simply - does anyone know the exact diameter of that stock ammeter (the size of the hole it goes into) and does anyone know of any modern / digital replacements (FAA approved / PMA / STC) that will fit in that same hole / space?
Thanks,
- Charles
