Twin comanche door seal

Twin comanche door seal

Postby Bryan Rose » Thu Apr 04, 2013 6:00 am

I've been reading the board and Comanche Tips about the door seals, but am still seeking some advice.

My '64 Twinco only has 2600 hours on her, the door is the stock setup, there appears to be little wear. It opens, closes and latches well. No issues with partial latching etc. However, it has a very loud hiss. The seal is intact, but looks compressed, shrunken, and some cracking. So, I'm sure it needs to be replaced.

Replacing it seems to be easy enough, however my fear is that the new seal will be larger and create closing problems. I'm reading where people replace them, then have to put on the Cherokee latch to make it close.

Is there a recommended seal for the stock door?

Brown Aircraft Supply (http://www.brownaircraft.com/) They stock the stock seals for Comanche's, Proper glue and glue removers, and are familiar with our issues. They can give a few good hints.

Brian... I second Jim's suggestion! I tried several with 20 years of Comanche ownership (2 aircraft). Brown's is the best answer I ever came across. My single did have the Cherokee door latch... (on it when I bought it)... don't have it on the twinco.

Brian,

I had to replace my '66 PA30 door seal a few years ago.
My mechanic had to try a couple of seals, and I am not sure what seal was the final seal that is working great today. But, when it was first applied the door did not want to close. It had to be pushed shut and latched. After sitting, closed and locked, for a day the seal molded to the frame and has worked perfectly and easily since then. No more noise and very easy to close and latch from inside. I do not have the upper Cherokee latch BTW but I do have a very good fitting door!

My seal wasn't great until I ripped it out and installed an inflatable seal ten years ago. Silence really is golden:

I do have the Cherokee upper latch, which I know has saved be from a lot of blowing air more than once.
