Any know where I can get a flap gauge, cheap?

Flap indicator mechanism is exactly like a fuel level indicator. Air Parts of Lock Haven fixes them. They did a good job on mine - it was not the gauge - it was the mechanism. Assuming it is like a Twin's.

At first I though it was gauge problem as the flap moved smoothly but the gauge stuttered. Clifton Aero removed the mechanism and the stutter was clearly evident. Shipped to Air Parts, O/H and has operated perfectly ever since - 18 months now.

Hi Kris,

In the meantime while waiting for a new/rebuilt gauge, you can "install" an alternative. Using a piece of black electrician's tape, place the tape on the outer portion of the flap near the left aileron to mark when the flap is 1/2 way deployed. The mark will disappear below the edge of the wing when the flaps are up and is easily seen in flight when the flaps are deployed to tell you when you are at 1/2 flaps. You can add finer gradations but they really aren't needed.

Half flaps is equivelent to maximum down movement of the aileron. Honestly in a Comanche there is very little use for anything but full up, and full down in flight, and the takeoff setting can be made by rolling the yoke over and matching down deflection. Of course I have to remind you that operating the aircraft with any inop equipment is illegal, unless complying with the full requirements of the FARs...
