Need a new or repair of spinner cap

Need a new or repair of spinner cap

Postby Steven Brewer » Thu Mar 17, 2011 4:15 am

I had a generator mount bolt fail in-flight, due to corosion, caused engine vibrations and elongated the spinner cap screw holes.
I think I found the part number in the comanche part catalog (23819-03)???
I have a Twin Comanche, IO-320 engines, with Q-tip props (HC-E2YL-2BSF).

Does anyone know where I can get a new cap or repair the old one. Google hasn't been very good to me, and I have looked at the usual parts stores on line, but no help.

Thanks in advance.

Hi and welcome to the Forum.

Had a similar problem due to a mechanic's error. Hartzell had the parts - a dome and cap - luckily in stock for a counter-rotated - yours appears to be regular rotation so hopefully they'll be able to help. I know my Twin's spinners are LoPresti winner spinners but they are made by Hartzell so when it was AOG, that's where i got them sourced. In my case the dome hole was enlarged due to vibration when it was installed improperly.

FYI. I was told at the time there was a work around and I'd be able to re-use the 'damaged' dome but since a spinner had come off the aircraft in 1992 in flight and put a hole in the windshield, dented the fuselage and tail, I wasn't willing to run the risk of a similar problem in the future.

Hope this helps.

Steven,
You have the STC'd spinners made by Hartzell as Pat states (easy to tell in the pics, thanks!). Go to Hartzell, not Piper for this part, as the PN in the parts manual will be incorrect due to your mod status.

Thank you gentlemen, you were right on with contacting Hartzell. A couple emails and phone calls, plus $366 later, they are making the cap for me right now (I hope).

Thanks again.

Hey Steve,

No big deal, although I appreciate the correction.

I recently told the story of my first FAA medical exam when I got the 'student license', my instructor Mom noticed the sex box had an M in it. At least in your case, we hadn't met yet - anyway, it is always good for a laugh.

Back on your spinner cap. Don't be surprised if the cap and dome have slightly different finishes. All four pieces of the twin's do - only noticeable by the aircraft owner though.
