Pa 39 Exhaust

Postby Darrin Henry » Sun Jan 24, 2010 5:12 am

My Exhaust especially the #3 cylinder is rubbing the lower cowl. The engine mounts appear new. I purchased the plane in march, the shop that had been maintaining it covered this up well with a patch, body filler, and heat blankets on the inside. The cowls appear original. Anyone seen this before? Also this is a turbo. And has Lopresti nose bowls.
Thanks Darrin

Hi Darrin,

I have a non-turbo 39 #10 with LoPresti engine nose cowls and with the rest of the cowls original and do not have this problem.

However I do keep the Lord mounts fresh and at engine overhaul, had the engine baskets overhauled with Kosola. Kosola said the baskets were out of spec.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Pat and Jeff
I will investigate the isolators and mounts, I may even take it to Webco.

Darrin,

Wherever you take it, a lot of mechanics tighten those mounts by feel. After a much longer story, I now ask that a torque wrench be used and the mounts tightened to 475 inch-pounds. The spec is 450-500 inch pounds.

Hope this helps and when you find the problem, it would be great if you posted the answer here so we can all learn. Maybe you'll find something we all need to know.
