Yellowknife Fly-in

Yellowknife Fly-in

Postby N3322G » Thu Dec 31, 2009 1:56 pm

Husband and I are starting to plan 2010 trips and this looks like a good one.

If you are like me, I never heard of this place. My introduction came at the Old Board meeting in Dayton where I happened to sit down next to Carol Ostergard which led to meeting Don which made me pay more attention to his Tribe report on the planned fly-in. I picked up some literature which has since become lost in my office. What is burned in my memory is Don's presentation to the General Meeting as he invited everyone to the fly-in. Tears in my eyes due to laughter.

Thanks to this website, it was easy to review the last issue of the Flyer and verify that more details will be coming. I recall it is some time in June.

In the meantime I Googled Yellowknife and noticed the airport is bigger than the downtown area on Google maps - always a good start and it is 2,187 miles from Ft Worth - east of Yukon and north of Calgary which means we'll likely stop in Calgary. We've been there before and it has always been a great stop.

I got a note the other day Bill Schnauffer was looking at going - anyone else?

Pat: Several of us from Washington State are giving "serious consideration" to joining the group.

Hi,

If anyone needs info on the Calgary area I can help. I'm based in Airdrie which is just North of Calgary. If you fly into Airdrie I can arrange a ride into town or to the new Cross Iron Mills shopping mall with the flying club. Airdrie is CEF4. My cell number is 403-510-6880 or lbiever@telus.net

Thanks to all for the kind words and the displays of enthusiasm for The Great Yellowknife Fly-In of 2010. The Fly-In goes June 17-21 which is also the Summer Solstice. (The Longest Day is a big thing in the North.)

I submitted a piece for the January issue of the "Flyer" but due to some of the electrons and protons going wrong our Editor Kim did not receive it, so no story in the Flyer till Feb.

I did, on Dec 15, send out via e-mail "Yellowknife Update #1" to everyone who put their name on my sign-up sheet at Dayton, plus all Tribe Chiefs. I plan to send out another one in the next couple of weeks, followed by a few more that will deal with border crossing procedures (nothing to it), preferred routes, GA-friendly airports, charts, WX websites, etc. (And no, just a regular Mode C 4096 transponder is good enough.)

If you would like to be placed on my e-mail list for these Yellowknife Updates, please send me a private e-mail at "c-flhv@magtech.ca".
