HELP on Pre-Buy Need advice on Engine

Postby aiu0462 » Fri May 09, 2008 3:38 am

This may not be the right place,,,,,,but I need help with a decision. Looking and finished a pre-buy on a 66 260B Comanche with 575 hours SMOH. Problem is, engine has only run 34 hours in the last 3 years. Last oil change was Dec, 2007 and has 1 hour on it to date. I'm concerned with the CAM. Compressions all high 70's, but Lyc's problem of not having the cam in the oil or run regular, it can pit and rust. Emailed Blackstone Labs that do current oil analysis on my current airplane to see if they could do anything with only 1 hour on the oil change. Also, talked to the mechanic doing the pre-buy to see how much to pull a cylinder and check cam. The knowledge base is a LOT bigger outside this computer.

All ideas and opinions are welcome. Would buy this airplane.....but the cam bothers me.
Thanks,
Steve

Where is the airplane located? This is a big factor. What kind of oil has been kept in it? I would be very careful with this one. The money you spend for the inspection of the cam, as well as borescope look in the cyl. would be worth it IMHO. With that much time in "Lack of Use" there will no doubt be some other surprises so plan accordingly.

Zach,
Airplane is in Fresno, CA area as well as San Diego area. Aeroshell oil was used. Nice plane, guy just ran out of money and parked it. Went out once in awhile and ran it, but didn't fly it.

Did not pull cylinder. Borescope came out so well I passed and pick up the airplane Wed. Signed, sealed and soon delivered. YEAH! Looking forward to getting into a Comanche again.
