mixture control cable

mixture control cable

Postby Richard Andrews » Mon Dec 20, 2010 11:46 pm

anyone know of an STC'ed mixure control cable? My plane is sitting on the ground several hour away. Piper wants >14 weeks and >$800 for a new one; the aftermarket from Webco requires a field approval 337, which is not so much of a problem--there have been several obtained, but the time involved from the Little Rock FSDO is pretty prohibitive. Like, lots of months. The only alternative to an aftermarket cable that I have run across is a used cable, which I'm not real enthused about.

Hi Rich,

Have you tried McFarlane? All of my controls have come from there. I like them and they are approved so no 337.

Good luck, Don

Rich, my '60 Comanch 250 has a Mcfarland venier mixture control and no 337 was needed as it's PMA'd. I think their around $150. And I'd bet they're in stock. Ray B

Hi Rich,
Depends if you have injected powerplant or carburetor model. Mcfarlane option works for 0540 but unfortunately not for injection.

Hi Rich,

Barry's comment is well taken. If you have an injected model one approach is an owner produced part. McFarlane will custom build a control for you to your specification (ie length). You may wish to discuss this with your IA.

Good luck, Don

I may be able to get an aftermarked from Webco, but I'm dealing with the Little Rock FSDO here. I've been advised that for now the best move would be to get a used one from a salvager. However, they're not easy to come by. I have a number of inquiries out but no responses at all. Anyone know what happened to Suprize Valley Aviation in Cederville, California? They advertized in the Flyer about having 60 some odd Comanches for disassembly but their phone number is disconnected, and I cannot find a Cedarville airport in the AOPA directory.

I have a few reservations about putting in a cable as old or older than the plane. But, that 's better than waiting a number of months for the FSDO. I'm told that I can't use a manufactured part under the aging aircraft statute, but I'm not sure why. That came from Cliff at Heritage Aero and he hasn't steered my wrong yet. If I can't get a used part I may well have Macfarlane make one, but that will still take the 337 form.

I have a 68 260 and put a MacFarlane custom on....it works wonderful and took only a few days to get...you just have to give them the length of the cable and all should be good
