Baggage Aux Fuel Tank STC?

Baggage Aux Fuel Tank STC?

Postby T210DRVR » Mon Nov 10, 2008 3:19 am

In my newest Comanche Flyer magazine I see that the featured Comanche has "a new aux aft baggage fuel tank STC from Merlin Simon". I haven't heard of this mod before. Is it still available?

I pulled this from other threads and from the other forum. I've been thinking about doing this myself.

Update May 5 08. baggage aux fuel tank
Does anybody know of a 337 accepting the 20 Gal baggage compartment tank STCed for the PA24 for the PA30?
I called Sy yesterday, and he said that there "may" be installations, but he does not know who did it...
For you singles drivers, Sy is in Torrance, CA, and his phone is 310 534 2161
The tank is very nice, as it follows the rear seat backrest and takes away very little space.
Take care up there
Robert

Hello Charles,

I'm new to the forum but a Comanche owner for 10 yrs.

I installed the Symons Baggage Tank in my 250 this past spring as part of an interior sound-proofing upgrade and have been very pleased with the STC package.

The cost was about $2300 as I recall. The capacity is 20 gal. and you can get every drop of it in level flight. This give us a six hour range with reserves and that's plenty for me!

I still have room for three roll-aboards in the baggage compartment plus room for tools, oil, and the airplane cover.

Mr. Symons uses aluminum for the tank and stainless for the hold-down straps and fittings. His fuel sending unit and gauge is automotive, though and doesn't fit a standard 2-1/4" hole. That's my only criticism but we were able to work around it for a good looking installation. The only inconvenience is in fueling. With most planes you can cram the gas in as fast as you like. With this tank, you have to feed it slowly b/c the filler neck bends to the left - small issue. I could carry a piece of 1" tubing as an extension like my Pitts but it's just not that big a deal.

Best regards,

#### Wolf

Baggage Aux Tank

Postby David Pyle » Mon Nov 10, 2008 7:40 pm

I assume that this can only be done in pre 1966 Comanches. The later models have a different cabin configuration. Also how is the filler accessed? How about cabin fuel smell?
