Janitrol question

Janitrol question

Postby Timothy Poole » Wed Jun 24, 2015 11:55 pm

This is going to seem like a silly question but I can't find it documented anywhere and well, my luck is I'd break the thing if just start pulling and twisting....

How does that manual fuel shutoff for the Janitrol heater (in the panel, above the fan/heat switch) work? Do you pull it? Turn it? etc.

Thanks,
Tim

Mine turns with difficulty so I leave it in the on position all the time.

There is a very real chance of unscrewing the valve packing and introducing a fuel leak into the nose compartment (it's a rod that engages a valve on the other side of the firewall) by operating this valve every time you run the heater. I know what the book says, but I suggest that that knob be painted red and it only be used as a fire valve in case of a heater emergency. There are two electrical fuel solenoid valves on the unit itself so if they are operating properly (as required to be checked by AD) this valve is an unnecessary complication and potential bad day.

I'm with you Zach. When I was checked out on my PA30 in 1997 I was instructed to leave it wide open unless I was on fire,,,it has never been closed, to my knowledge. ahp

That's great to know Zach. I will add that to our check out procedures.
