require! twin tach for twin com.

Postby Torquil » Thu May 28, 2015 9:44 pm

I have a twin tach with broken internal springs. I would like to source a replacement and have my one serviced. I am in the UK but can work with anyone. Can anyone help?

Original tachs for Twins were two separate gauges so the dual tach is a retro fit and as I recall they were hard to get in the first place. I would suggest emailing the salvage houses and Webco with the part number.

A good instrument shop will be able to repair it. There should be on in your area, or they are plentiful in the US.

We have a twin tach (both needles in one gage) available. I have not researched the market value. Do you have a value in mind? ahpowers@aol.com

I have to say that the next time I have any tach or manifold pressure gauge troubles at all I am going to pull them and put in an electronic gauge.

Hi Torquil, I just had my twin tach repaired by Keystone Instruments of Lockhaven, PA. Nice people. They also did my fuel senders and gauges. My right tach needle was wandering a bit.

I was having problems with my tachs in my PA-39, so at last annual I replaced them with Horizons P-1000 Digital Tachs. Also removed the old tach drive cables.

These are very accurate devices. So accurate that you get frustrated trying to sync the engines down to the last RPM, which you can't. After while you just let them drift around and are happy if they are within 20 RPM. With the old tachs you would never have known anyway.

A big benefit of these tacks is that they are monitoring the magnetos all the time. If they sense a difference between the mags they will turn a indicator from green to yellow. If bad enough the indicator turns red.

A mag that checked out fine on a run-up was showing a yellow indicator from time to time. Turns out it had a bad coil and I would not have known until complete failure with the old tachs. A field overhaul of the mag solved the problem.

From 39-10 - thanks for posting Bill - great to know about the mag monitoring.

Can you also describe the install process?

Pat - sorry for the long delay in my reply.

The digital tachs were installed by my A&P/IA. They mount in the holes left from the old tachs, and they get the signal from the wiring to the mag switches. No need to run new wire to the engines.

Mine are the Horizon brand.
