Fine rubber dust

Fine rubber dust

Postby Jim Menconi » Fri Nov 21, 2014 12:57 am

I am getting a fine rubber dust which seems to be blown into my lap and below my seat while in flight. I have checked everything where if might be coming from but nothing is obvious. Does anyone have any ideas as to what it might be. I think it's some kind of impeller or something like that. Don't have any idea besides that. My heater was overhauled 2 annuals ago and I frankly don't use it, will probably use it this winter. Any ideas would be appreciated,

Is your vacuum system functioning properly? The vacuum pump blades can produce that type of fine material when they start to fail but that would also mean your filters aren't catching it, you have an open line, etc.

What aircraft?

I have a PA 30B turbo twin. I recently replaced the vacuum pump on the left engine and less than a 150 hrs ago I replaced the one on the right engine. In the annual I just completed, we checked the filters but is there one that I might have missed?

Ah in the twin the filters are out in the nose and nacelles IIRC so doubt that's it.

Does it happen the entire flight? Every flight?

It has been happening for the past 5 or 6 flights as best I can recall.

Steering rod boots? -black rubber

Seat foam? - brown rubber.

My seats puke out some light tan powder everytime I sit down, discovered that the seat foam is disintegrating.

I have checked all of that, it seems to be blowing towards me as I find it in my lap and on the floor below me as well. It's not allot but it is noticeably there. I have to brush it off when I get out.

Maybe check the condition of the vacuum lines themselves? Im seeing a lot of these limited life parts in service a lot longer than they were intended to be when originally installed. Anything rubber seems pretty toasted after years of use and can disintegrate into fines pieces.
