Static when I key up to Talk

Static when I key up to Talk

Postby George Kretschmann » Sun Jun 15, 2014 1:34 am

Here lately I seem to be having static when I push the PTT switch. It is so bad I cannot hear anything but interference static. The only way to stop the static is to turn off the master switch and turn it back on and sometimes that does not work. Just today on final when I called final the static started. Since I was on final I just ignored it and just before touch down it just stopped and was all good, I can't figure it out? Seems to me it has to be a loose contact somewhere or lose ground. I replaced the PTT switch's thinking that was the problem but it was not. I used contact cleaner on all of the headset jacks today. Is it possible the radio is going out? Is it also possible the intercom is going bad it is a David Clark unit no longer in production. I certainly can't go into any controlled fields with this going on I can't hear anything. Any ideas??? Thanks George

George,
What radios do you have and does the same thing happen when transmitting on comm 1 and comm 2 (I assume you have two coms)? If it does, its probably the intercom. If it only happens on one comm then its probably that radio. When you key the mike, depending on what radios you have, you switch from intercom audio to radio side tone (some radios didnt have a side tone so people jumpered the intercoms so they would have a virtual sidetone). If you have one of the radios with no sidetone out, and the intercom was jumpered, then it is probably an intercom problem. Now with that said "radio" problem or "intercom" problem also included all the wiring from one to the other.

Zack, It may be the Com 2 I'm still trouble shooting it when the problem arises. I have a King KX 175B as Com 2 and a Mack 1700 as com 1. I was using Com 2 and I think I was starting to have the problem so I switched to Com 1 since I the traffic was heavy. I did not have the problem since then. I think I'll use Com 1 as the main com radio and see if the problem comes up. But you never know it may be the intercom. Thanks George

I have come to the conclusion that my David Clark Intercom is faulty, it is a old discontinued unit. I have clear no static communication when I turn it off and just speak without it. Is there any recommendation for what I need to replace the unit with. BTW the intercom is in a 2.25 hole and I would like to replace it with a round unit. Thanks George

George, I know you asked for round but an intercom feature is part of the Garmin slimline audio unit and after it got installed correctly, we've been happy with it and panel space was freed up.
