Spark Plug Gaskets

Does anyone have a procedure for annealing spark plug gaskets?

Heat them up to bright orange with a propane torch and then quench them in water.

New ones are cheap and will have the correct temper. 36 cents each at S&S.

I believe the gaskets can be left to air cool as well, it doesn't hurt but no need to quench them in water.

Hmmmmm.
I always heat to a rosy red color and then let air cool.....this is called annealing (softening).
Heating and then dousing in water causes tempering....opposite of annealing.
You want the gaskets soft and crushable, right?
Have I been doing it wrong all these years?
