180 Prop Control Cable

180 Prop Control Cable

Postby Philip Weihe » Thu Mar 28, 2013 6:31 pm

I need help with sourcing a prop control cable for my 180. The cable became extremely stiff when cycling during the run up. In flight, it freed up some and operated almost normally. Did the Zack recommended lubricating treatment with little improvement. My mechanic says there’s physical damage inside the cable that’s causing the binding. I believe this to be the original cable. (50+ years old)

Tom Pentecost from SE Piper provided an OEM part number, (455-236), but the part I believe is NLA. He suggested WEBCO who in turn referred my mechanic to McFarlane. Seems as though they have 250 cables in stock but will have to make the 180 cable to-order. This option sounds expensive. I should have pricing in a few days.

In the meantime, can anyone provide possible alternatives? Preferred Airparts has used inventory under the Piper number but will not guarantee an exact fit.

Thank you.

My mechanic said the same. Send it out to Mcfarlane to duplicate for about $275.

MacFarlane is the way to go. The idea behind providing them an exact length is that the cable may then qualify as an owner produced part. The part is a quality product, you will be happy.

My mechanic is finishing up installing new McFarlane throttle/mixture/prop cables in my 250 right now. I can't believe the difference in how much easier these cables move than what came out of the old girl. And they look nice and pretty too!
