Original Piper AFM

Original Piper AFM

Postby Terry Tibbitts » Sat Feb 16, 2013 5:20 pm

I just purchase a 1959 PA-24-250 and I am trying to get the overall aircraft back into airwrothy status. I am new to both Comanche ownership and the ICS; you guys have been very helpful!

I understand there was originally a factory issued AFM that consisted of 8.5x11 pages stapeled together. This was not with the aircraft when I got it. Does the ICS POH replace the requirement to have the AFM, and if no, can I just copy the AFM from another owner and be legal with the FAA, or did the original AFM have the speciffic AC SN printed on it?

Thanks,
Terry

Terry,
First, welcome to Comanche ownership. If you are just getting a neglected old bird back up and going, I will first offer a little bit of encouragement. You will have many many days full of frustration and be seriously questioning your sanity for doing the project at times, but in the end, once you get in front of all of the issues, the airplane will make you forget all of those bad memories! I speak from experience!

So with that said, good news, the ICS AFM/POH is FAA certified to take the place of your original AFM...however...that is not all of the document. You will need to input your aircrafts Weight and Balance data as well as equipment list. You will also need to add any flight manual suppliments required. If you have an autopilot, you need a suppliment. If you have a GPS, you need a suppliment. Tip tanks, guess what? You need a suppliment. So after you find all of that and put it together, you now have a complete POH. My suggestion is to purchase the proper POH unbound, and insert it allong with all of the suppliments into a 3 ring binder of appropriate size. Keep it in the seatback pocket and you will have not only all of the info on the plane at your fingertips, but you will be legal too!

Thanks, Zach. I have the W&B information and the supliments, just not the AFM, so it will be easy in my case. I will get the ICS POH ordered and put it all together.

You guys are great!
