New Glass

New Glass

Postby George Kretschmann » Mon Feb 11, 2013 1:15 am

I'm in the process of installing new glass in my PA-30 from GLAP. I'm using the 1/4" stuff with UV tint etc. Just wondering if there are any surprises or hints that I may be missing. I did go for the 1 piece windshield and that has been a challenge to fit but we are almost there I should finish up this weekend. George :D

If you use any caulk, be sure it is the paintable variety so any future exterior paint around the windshield will adhere.

Cliff at Heritage Aero told me not to use Silicone caulk on my acrylic windows. Cliff said that silicone will cause the acrylic windows to "craze" due to a chemical reaction. He told me to use aircraft approved acrylic caulk. Currently my aircraft has a gray-green caulk at the window edges which Cliff thinks is "pro-seal" commonly used on pressurized aircraft for this purpose. We had the conversation because there are few areas I need to touch-up.

Just as a point of info for those considering new windows....
I can't express how happy I have been with the Arapahoe windshield conversion from Knots2U.
The plane looks modern and the vis is like flying in a fishbowl compared to the "tank slit" old one.
Worth checking out.....and, no, I have no affilliation with Knots2U.
Steen
PS I had mine done by Knots2U at their place at BUU.
