Interav alternators

Evidently they are NLA. Does anyone have any information on what happened?

I talked to the owner this am. He does not have any alternators in stock at this time. Whether he gets more will depend on economic conditions. He does have parts available, so he is able to support those that have Interav alternators on their aircraft.

Thanks Dave. To take this thread a step further, I'm looking to replace my generator with an alternator on my 180. I ordered the Interav kit thru Aircraft Spruce and was on back order for the past month plus before they emailed me and told me they are no longer available. Does anyone have any suggestions for conversion kits? Seems like Plane Power is pretty popular, has anyone installed one of these? Pros and cons? Did you have to remove your prop?

Thanks,
Mike

Mike,

I do not have a Plane Power alternator conversion yet, but have looked into it and hope it will be in the budget next year. Based on info on their site, you will need a different belt, # 452-541, if your belt pulley is 7 1/2 ". I measured my 180 belt pulley at 7 1/2", so I expect the prop will need to be removed. Otherwise, the conversion kit looks to have everything you need except a greater capacity circuit breaker and possibly a new alternator cable.

Aerotech of Lousiville had the same low price as many last I checked but offered a core purchase ($65-85 depending on your generator) of your generator with the purchase. Best of luck!

I have installed the Plane Power system on my Twin and I like it very much. It is a nice, simple installation and got rid of a lot of troublesome components.

Since the Interav alternator is NLA, I would choose the Plane Power unit to install. As a general rule, I always replace the belt when I install an alternator. (Hence the need to pull the prop.) However, if the belt is relatively new, has no cracks or obvious wear, I might be convinced not to replace at that time. The STC will probably recommend what belt to use with the new alternator. I would wait until I had the new alternator mounted to see if the old belt fits, that is to see if there is enough ability to adjust. Your old belt may be too short, too long, or just right. If it's just right or acceptable, then you will know what belt to get if the mounting instructions don't call out a specific belt part number. One other suggestion. Chief Aircraft in Oregon used to be a stocking Interav dealer. They just might have a complete kit on the shelf. You could give them a call just to see.

So If I have an Interav alternator that needs replacement can I just use the Plane Power Alternator or do I need the whole kit (bracket and voltage regulator). Is having the Interav Alternator rebuilt an option? If so who would you recommend to do the work. Thanks

Interav said they still have parts. Your AP mech. can replace those and or the bearings if needed.
