PA30 turbo operation

PA30 turbo operation

Postby Bryan Burnette » Mon Oct 22, 2012 1:17 pm

I have recently purchased a 1966 PA30 with the Miller conversion. I am looking for some information on operation. I am new to twin engines and have an experienced instructor but he isn't intimately familiar with the Twin Comanche. If anyone has any recommendations on power setting, leaning and turbo operation and leaning, I would be very appreciative.

I have been flying Cessna's for my entire flying career and am used to being able to easily measure the fuel quantity in the tanks. I have a Shadin fuel flow readout but haven't flown the airplane enough to really trust it. Does anyone have a secret for measuring fuel quantity without removing all the fuel and adding back?

I didn't realize what a remarkable airplanes these were until I happened upon one. I see why owners speak so highly of them.

Thanks,

Bryan Burnett

Hi Bryan,
Big welcome to the Comanche Society!

And congratulations to finding and acquiring your Miller twin. Sounds like a sister ship to mine, except mine has a radar nose cone, (I removed the radar), instead of the Miller nose that I envy you for.

I've only had mine a year, so am not the expert to advise you. Suspect others will tho.
In meantime you might query Karl Hipp, khipp@99victor.com, a past president of ICS and fairly long time Miller Twin owner. He and John VanBladeren, (another past pres and long time Turbo Twin owner), flew Karls to Europe and back). Wealth of info there!

Looking forward to meeting you and comparing notes.

Best regards,
Don

Thanks Don,

I hope to make one of the clinics in the next few months and meet some folks. Half the fun of getting a different airplane is learning about it.

Bryan,

Welcome to the Forum and Comanche ownership. Like Don said, lots of folks know stuff that can help you fly the new to you twin.

I'm very fond of the CPPP courses and have taken them twice as I like to learn - even after 42 years of the same twin, there is stuff to learn.

Sounds like you are the same. Also suggest the M. Taylor DVDs in the CFF part of the ICS website http://www.comancheflyer.com/NS/cff_merchandise.php
