Kris: I have missed OSH the last two years, but I somehow I have the impression that on one of the group arrivals during that period there may have been problems between the Comanche group fly in and the powers that be who run OSH.

Can anyone enlighten us on that point?

I note that the Bonanza and Cessna pilots wanting to group fly in to OSH are having formation flying clinics. It makes me wonder if the EAA is restricting group arrivals if they are not flying in tight formation. ????

I'm not interested in formation flying or practicing it. The 500 feet in trail with 250 foot lateral offset between airiplanes ithat we have used in the past is comfortable to me.

Surprising to me that there are so few comments, pro or con, on this topic. Should we move it to the other Comanche site?

Al: I also wish we were still having the group arrival and group parking. I really wish we could at least have group parking to be able to easily park and camp with fellow Comanches as in the last few years. I will be at Osh in the Vintage camping area somewhere.

Hi my name is Kris, question for you... How did you get in the Vintage area? Was this pre coordinated? Is there a section or rep i need to talk to? Will you be in this area this year? I could keep going like a toddler with the questions :lol:
Hope you get the jist, i just want to park in the vintage area. thanks

Kris: Great looking Comanche! The "other" Comanche site I referenced is entitled " Comanche Owners Forum"
A good site that seems to get more Comanche comments than this official site.

Noted the questions about getting to "Classic" parking. I have not as yet read the NOTAM the FAA issues for OSH arrivals, but I think there should be something there to answer your question. In past years you put and 8 1/2 x 11 sign in your winow and the ground guys directed you to the classic area. Problem for group parking is that they park you at the first open space, and therefore you need to fly in together if you want to park/camp together. That is why I raised the question in my earlier post.

I think we need a contact with the EAA OSH management to get answers.

http://www.airventure.org/flying/ has a download for flying in - haven't read it for this year but they normally include how to get where you want to go.

When my son and I attended the 50 for 50 OSH flt-in the first thing I bought was the biggest tent I could get at WalMart. 12x12 for about 80 bucks. Next were two queen size mattresses along with one cotton and one flanel sheet. Coupled with a good blanket and the sleeping bag as a comforter we slept great. Don't forget to get a portable blow up unit too. Cost about 10 bucks but you don't wann't to be blowing up your bed with a bicycle pump or worse. Probably won't make OSH as I'm just getting back from a sailing adventure but who knows. Would love to see another 50 for 50. That was a hoot.

To all that are going to Oshkosh, there is an Iphone / Ipad app from Sporty's for free.
It has all the arrival procedures and maps of the camping areas etc.

Kris: Without a formal reserved parking deal with EAA OSH management, I doubt that a formal date and time would be recognized and a specified parking area reserved. My sense is that EAA now requires any group fly in MUST have formal organized formation flying practice before they sanction a group fly in with a reserved parking area. ( ARE THERE ANY OF YOU IN COMANCHE LAND WHO ARE EAA INSIDERS AND/OR KNOW MORE ABOUT THIS? iF SO PLEASE REPLY!).

I believe the entire Comanche fleet is now old enough to qualify for camping/parking in what was in the past called the Classic parking area....which parallels the North South runway. ( Not the North Forty (parallel to the East - West Runway)which contains camping/parking for any age airplanes.

Given the above, if a group of airplanes qualifying for the Classic parking area meet somewhere near OSH and fly in together via the Ripon - Fisk arrival procedures specified by the FAA, and showing the Classic parking sign in their windshields upon landing, I believe they would probably ending up parking as a group.

As I said in an earlier post, if I arrive by Ripon/Fisk arrival procedure, I like to get there early to minimize conflicts in getting in line for the arrival and not having to set up camp at the end of a long day of flying. I am flying from the West Coast and therefore usually plan to overnite someplace within an hour of OSH before flying in. I am open to modifying this timing. At this point I am planning to arrive at OSH the Sunday before the show opens, but I am flexible to Monday.

If others have similar ideas or comments, please post same and we can see what might work.

I plan on arriving earlyu as well, but was looking more at Saturday. The wife and I are arriving from Florida and plan to spend a day in St Louis (we've Never been). I plan on using the "VAC" sign for Vintage aircraft camping. Thoughts?

Arriving Saturday with a VAC sign should get you a good camping spot. The last three years, the Comanche mass arrival on Sunday morning around 10:30am resulted in camping in the Vintage area across from the Ultralights and Tall Pines Cafe. Four years ago (the 50th Comanche anniversary) that same time put the group in the South 40 (a Saturday afternoon arrival was necessary for the Ultralight area), but since that time fuel prices and arrival weather may have resulted in less arrivals by Sunday morning. If weather really delays you, good spots start to clear out due to departures starting Wednesday.

My son and I are planning our 5th Oshkosh trip from New Hampshire, probably arriving Saturday afternoon with a early arrival weather alternate of Friday afternoon.

Previous mass arrival events have gathered at Watertown, WI (about 50nm South) which has great FBO service, an on-field Holiday inn Express and several restaurants within walking distance. At least one of the group "commuted" daily from Watertown for a few days at OSH without camping. Watertown can be a great stopover for a fresh start in the morning for the Fisk arrival.

Look for us in the Vintage Camping area when you arrive and be prepared for the greatest aviation show on Earth.
