Prop Oil Leak at Shaft

Prop Oil Leak at Shaft

Postby Charles (David) Miller » Sun Apr 01, 2012 11:57 am

There is a persistent and recurring oil seep that I've been dealing with that is coming from the area where the propeller mates to the engine shaft on my twin. At first I thought it was the Lycoming shaft seal and replaced that. I also replaced the Hartzell prop "O" ring at the same time. About 35 hours later, it was making a mess again. I removed the prop and the engine seal was dry but oil was seeping by the "O" ring again so I put in a new one. 5 hours later and it's still seeping. Anybody got any ideas?? I talked to my prop shop and they said something about a "sleeve" but I don't know what that is. Any help would be appreciated. It's just one of those messy little seeps that you have to clean up after every flight. Oil consumption is very light.

.5 isnt long enough to tell if it is leaking. The residual oil will keep seeping out of tight spaces. Wash it down and keep cleaning it for at least two to three hours. Then make the decision.
