Prop Alcohol

Prop Alcohol

Postby Edward Rognerud » Tue Feb 07, 2012 8:03 pm

Hello,

Does anybody have a good source for prop alcohol? I believe it is a 99% isopropyl alcohol product. I am in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area in Minnesota, and it seems to be a difficult find. I did find that Signature does have some for $60 per gallon. None of the other operations even stock it, which seems a little strange regarding Minnesota's extensive exposure to icing conditions. I also found it online and was quoted $95 per gallon plus a $50 hazmat fee on top of shipping. I am hoping to find something a little more reasonable.

Thank you,

When I have bought it, I have paid about $100 for a 5 gallon pail. I would check local industrial supply places. Many moons ago, I flew out of KSTP and we bought it be the 55 gallon drum.

If you were closer to Northern California, I could get you some waste isopropyl for nothing. It is clear with no particulates. I is just used to rinse electronic components so they only use it once as the purity required there is much more than necessary for dumping it on your props.

Has anyone worked out the cost for cheap booze per gallon? Moonshine, maybe.

The product specified in my POH is Aeroshell compound 06A. Datasheet is at:

The relevant US standard is: TT-I-735a Grade B which is for 99.6%+ Isopropyl alcohol. You tend to find either 99% or 99.9% IPA on sale. Given the likelihood of a bit of condensation in the tank, I'm not sure whether it matters which one. I find eBay has plenty of sellers here in the UK

As a minor cultural reference, if you go into a British pub and ask for a pint of IPA, you will get a glass of India Pale Ale.

If you order an IPA here you would get the same, India Pale Ale is the in beer right now among the microbrewers.

I have some Thunderhead IPA in the fridge right now, but it's way too good to squirt on props! :D
