Line to Pitot Tube Broke - How to Replaceaaaaa/

Line to Pitot Tube Broke - How to Replaceaaaaa/

Postby Jim Farris » Mon Oct 24, 2011 2:32 am

Recently the plastic line to my pitot tube broke inside the wing of my Comanche 180. Does anyone know how to replace the plastic line? My mechanic and I don't see any simple solution. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks, Jim

Don Oltman posted the procedure for this replacement May-27, 2010. I printed out a copy for the future in case I needed it. There is a number on my print out, 10354.1, I don't know if this will help locate it in the archives or not. His description of the procedure is quite detailed and fills over a page. If you can't find it let me know and I'll Fax it to you or read it over the phone, I'm too old and slow to type it all out here. Ray B

Dear Jim and Ray,

About 5 years ago Charlie Horton wrote and article about replacing that line which was published in the Comanche Flyer Magazine. IIRC it was about 4 pages long. The process was quite extensive and not an easy fix. Since the original line runs along the front part of the wing and in front of the main fuel tank, it is very inaccessible once the wing is fully assembled.

My own thoughts would be to run a new line along the rear spar in the vicinity of the aileron control cables. That would still be a lot of work, but make everything much more accessible. Best of luck.

Sincerely,

All,

Since ICS started posting the Flyer online, I went to the Home page,
Clicked Members
Clicked Flyer Magazine
Searched on Horton Pitot and found April 2005. Since we know that is the issue, just download April, 2005 issue

Skip - good memory

After hearing that a 4 page procedure is out there Don Oltman's method may be easier. It starts with pushing a weed eater plastic line through the old tube and gluing it in place. That gives you a strong pull-through to attach a new tube to. Ray B

OK. After a long time away, decided to re-up with ICS. Nice to be back. If you have any questions on the tube replacement give me a call.
