Landing lights

Can someone confirm the Twin Landing stock lights are GE 4509? and quartz version is Q4509 if memory serves.

I've looked at the parts manual but it doesn't cover that part number - likely because its a supply item.

I know who replaced it last and they did not log it. Frustrating.

With tip tanks it is not a job I can handle.

Getting ready to replace with Whelen Parmetheus - any one have personal experience with these Whelen lights?

Yes the 4509's are the correct lamps. I strongly recommend the Q's. They last MUCH longer than the standard 4509.

I have the Whelen LED's and love them. For the money and ease of installation and simplicity you can't beat them. I am sure they are not as bright as HID's but much brighter than the stock lights. They draw less current and I use them more for recognition since they last so long.

The whole recognition thing is why we would buy them - under busy Class B and into very busy uncontrolled airport. Thanks for the thoughts.

WHELEN IS A GOOD WAY TO GO....EXCELLENT PRODUCT.
FOR MANY OF US THE 4509 IS AVAILABLE AS A TRACTOR REPLACEMENT BULB....4509....AT FARM IMPLEMENT STORES (Mr. Piper always looked at the cost side of things).
Install them with the posts vertical, not horizontal, and they give long life reliability at low cost.

I just installed the Whelen Parmetheus LED lights. From the looks of things they'll be great at night, but I haven't tried them out yet.

I also recommend the LED nav light replacement bulbs available at Aircraft Spruce (http://www.aircraftspruce.com/menus/el/ ... ement.html) - for the cost it's nice to never worry about a burnt out nav light bulb again, plus it's a huge decrease in amperage!

Were the nav lights drop in replace also? noticed your tip tanks - original? Osborne?

The nav lights are drop-in replacements, just like swapping out the old incandescent bulbs.

The tip tanks are the Osborne retrofit tanks. They are great to have!

Last year I replaced my stock landing lights with the LED replacements from Knots 2 U. I think the recognition difference is huge. From the cockpit at night there is definitely a difference but not as great. I think it is a cleaner white light and maybe a wider beam. Not as yellow. I use mine for every take of and landing even during the day. If I am in a high traffic area I will leave them on for an extended time.

Pat, I have the Knots2U HID landing lights in the wing tips and a Whelen LED taxi light on the nose wheel. I've had the HID lights for years. Either HID or LED are a big improvement over both the standard GE4509 or the Q4509, the LED are more economical.

The Whelen LED landing lights are great. However they must be installed with the ground on the negative terminal and the 12 volts on the positive terminal. Easy to do at installation. I believe that reversing the polarity will destroy the LED. John A. Pabst ICS 2722
