Mexico in Search of Truth

Mexico in Search of Truth

Postby 9089P » Sat Feb 19, 2011 3:54 am

Hi Don,

I did not want to steal the Oil Plate thread so I started this one.

The bride and I up until 3 years ago had an annual trip to central Mexico, ten days in late March, generally the first half in the mountains (Morelia, Zacatecas, Cuernavaca, Guanajuato, etc.) and then the second half on the beach (Mazatlan. Puerto Villarta, Manzanillo, and Z). We stopped when things got rougher with the drug war. We miss it and are considering going this year again. So, I was hoping I could get a "weather" report if you will, ie. where are you, how's it going, etc..

Thanks in advance, Don

Sounds like we have a lot of common interests. Over the past few decades we have been to and love just about all the places you mention. To answer your question: We arrived in Guaymas, Sonora a few weeks ago, spent a few days there then flew over to Zacatecas where we met up with Barb and Richard Beil (ICS 927), flown down from Wisconsin in N9264P. Spent the better part of a week there then over to the Morelia/Patzcuaro area for another week. They've returned home now; we are now in a lovely-but-rapidly-becoming-loved-to-death resort about an hour's drive north of Puerto Vallarta.

The parks are still busy until late in the evenings with old folks visiting their neighbours, young families playing with their children, balloon vendors vending, strolling musicians singing, clowns clowning, teenage boys and teenage girls discovering each other. The sidewalk cafes are busy, everyone getting on with their lives. If one did not read the papers one would not be aware of the drug wars. There's no point in denying that there are some real problems but the atmosphere is most certainly not one of a country under siege. On the surface, we are unable to detect any negative changes from last year, three years ago, or ten years ago, whether at the airports or elsewhere.

Individual people may have their own reasons for not wishing to fly into Mexico. This is understandable but it is my carefully considered opinion that fear should not be one of those reasons.

I have compiled a little guide to flying in Mexico. I will happily e-mail a copy to anyone who is interested. Please e-mail me at c-flhv@magtech.ca for a copy, which I will send after I return home in mid-March. PLEASE DO NOT CLUTTER UP THIS BOARD WITH YOUR REQUESTS. (On the other hand, it may be that no one will be interested. That's OK, I can deal with rejection.)

Hope this helps.

Thank you very much for the reply. It is nice to have an idea from someone with shared expeiences. That resort wouldn't happen to be Guayabitos ? Cindy and I have landed at the beach strip many times, flagged a ride at Romita's, and stayed at the Villas Stephanie.
