Deice

Deice

Hi All,

Just wondering if twincom owners have noticed any difference in performance between an aircraft fitted with deice boots/props and one without?

Thanks.

Yes, It slows it down about 5 kts. Alky props seem to kill about 80-100FPM on the climb as well.

That seems about right, but I haven't run my airplane against another one. That would probably be the test as mine is deiced.

If rate of climb is cut by 80-100fpm, Zach, what must that do to the single-engine alt. capabilities, both drift-down and climb to?
When prop de-ice is added does the STC have limitations of this nature included?

No, there are no limitations, but these are my experience numbers talking. It does stand to reason that even though the cuff is only on the very inboard area of the prop blade, that it does affect the airflow over that area, and probably has an effect over span wise flow as well. Much like a prop that has eroded leading edges is less efficient than one with polished leading edges. Honesly I doubt that any performance testing was done on the alky prop STC back in the day. If it were done today, I would imagine there might be a performance change.

BTW, my turbo twin has alky props. With the props, and the turbos it is not a really stellar climber. It just climbs at the same rate to high altitudes. My NA twin climbed much better initially, but ran out of poop at about 14k with a load.

Is there a 'hot prop' electric deice option for the Twincom?
