San Diego Boycott

Postby Mike Foster » Fri May 28, 2010 8:01 am

Hello all,

Well it's late and as much as I didn't want to stay up any later, I don't want to let this go any longer over the weekend. So here goes in order.

1. Bill C. I did respond to you, and you know my personal feelings on this matter. I have done some checking on the situation, and will try to make sense in #4.

2. Jay, It appears in this instance that politics and the convention are in an unhappy marriage. I do agree that San Diego is a great place for a convention, and I do think the marriage can be salvaged if clearer minds prevail. (no offense intended)

3. Pat, See #2. Looking forward to seeing you again in September. Your graceful, genteel input is always appreciated.

4. Bill C. and all, I have gotten responses from the hotel coordinator and our tour operator to the queeries I forwarded them regarding this issue.
I can tell you all from their responses that we are not the only group sending warning shots across their bow, and they hear and are in high gear to mitigate the damage this could cause to their industries. I received a copy of a letter sent from the president of the San Diego tourism and Hospitality board to the Arizona representatives who responded to this City Council action with one of their own. The details of these are available by googling "San Diego Boycott". You will also find at this site that the San Diego City Council didn't actually vote to "Boycott" Arizona. They voted to adopt and draft a resolution denouncing the Arizona law, falling short of calling for a boycott, a la San Francisco and L.A. Granted it is still just dumbass political posturing, but it isn't anything more than that. What it can be, and what it shouldn't be, is a job killer. Believe me if there was a direct way of making stupid politicians pay for there idiocy, I'd be making cuts to get to the front of the line, but we really need to think about the end result of the way we choose to react to crap like this. There are somewhere around 180,000 service and hospitality workers in San Diego that don't deserve to get dumped on like this, and they will be the ones who suffer from this. It's not like they aren't already hit with the results of our new economy, then they have their fearless leaders running off at the mouth. Any consequences will be blamed on Arizona and the Media will report it that way.

So what are we to do? I for one am going to keep striving for a successful convention. One that covers the required BOD and CFF meetings, some good walkabouts, tours, and activities that will keep EVERYONE who attends, happy that they decided to come out for the 5 days (or more).

One thing I haven't noticed mentioned here, and I find it appropriate since Jeff seems to think ICS is secretly filing BK, is that the convention has the potential to be the single largest fund raising effort in a single week for ICS in any given year. This year, ICS benefitted to the tune of 17,000 and change from the folks who put on the Dayton convention.
My intention is to best that and it is doable if we get some participation. I'm not saying if you can't afford it or don't want to come that you should, but if you are having second thoughts due the political discussion, I urge you to check out Google, read what is really happening, and come out here and have some fun with us. It won't be the same without you.

Back to my list,

5. Doug, please don't knee jerk to the knee jerks see end of #4

6. Chic, See #5

7. Jeff, One thing you say actually makes a little sense. Gripe 1. I will try to massage the schedule saturday to make the General meeting fit in there. It may take some doing, but if you promise to attend in person I will try extra hard. Gripe 2. We are working on this already. Can't make promises or quote numbers for obvious reasons. Probably more than you will think is reasonable but others may benefit. Who knows, you might want to stay for that, too.

8. Hans, We all appreciate the work you have been and are doing. It doesn't go un noticed and our aircraft all benefit from your efforts.

9. Alan, See #7. Sorry you can't make the whole week. I'm sure tailhook will be more exciting. But... You're taking the wife?;^))

10. Scott, Thanks for the comments and all your help on the convention. You da man!!

11. Jeff, I've been in SW tribe 10 years. I go to most of the flyins because I don't mind talking to people in person. I've seen you twice. Once was at Outlaw. I can't think of one time anything positive has come out of your mouth, even in person. Next time I see you I will try to listen better.

12. Kevin, Thank you, good points. I like the tree idea. That would've saved me a lot of walking over the years. There ARE some good sized potted plants in the hotel foyer area...never mind.

13. David, See #7 Thanks

14. Zack, THANK YOU!!! for the comments and all you do for the organization (us)

15. Chris, See #7. Thanks

16. Elliot, Thanks for the comments. Don't really agree so much about the blame game, but you are still (I think) entitled to your opinion. End result the politics shouldn't ruin a good convention where we can enjoy our aircraft, learn more and have some fun as well.

17. Jeff, THINK POSITIVE. If you let your membership lapse, you won't have to jump back and forth from ICS to Delphi to slam ICS board members. I still want you to come to the meetings, tho.

I'm done. It's late. I have an early morning appointment with a waterski and cold water. Have a great Memorial Day weekend, all, and remember why we have Monday off. Because a lot of brave people died to keep this country free!!. God Bless 'em, every one.

I see that some folks still think that 70% of the dues go to publishing the Flyer. I suggest that all those who believe this take a look at Hank Spellman's post on the second page of the "Fleet Airworthiness Steering Committee" thread to see the real cost. Agree with having the Flyer or not, let's get the numbers right.

As far as moving the convention, it is too late to do so in my opinion. There is just not enough time to make all the arrangements in time for September. Agree with San Diego's position or not we are stuck.

Politics aside, who is really being hurt by boycotting the Convention? As Mike mentioned Dayton made money, and SD probably will also. The saying "Cut off your nose....." comes to mind.

Finally, IMHO this sort of political discussion belongs on the Delphi Forum, not here.

Just because you are pissed off at the lifeguard is not a good reason to pee in your own pool.

If you want real California politics, come on up to San Francisco. They make the San Diego folks look like Texans. My office overlooks Market Street in SF and I am treated to frequent demostrations against America and for every flavor of miscreant that you can possibly imagine, not the least of which are illegal alien child molesting commie fag junkies . . . .

It is a good thing my office window doesn't open or I would have been arrested or stone to death by now.

I will retire to somewhere that the populous hasn't taken quite such a thorough leave of its senses.

Kristen,
Come down to Paso Robles and retire here. Nice little airport, great wine and all the illegal alien, child molesting, commie fag junkies have been sent to Arizona.

Elliot,

I guess my little rant didn't scare everyone off. :-)

We should probably have a fly-in in Paso Robles one of these years.
