I was not aware this STC could apply to a single as well:

- better over the nose visibility
- firmer directional control during taxi
- (better?) positive rotation (what does the smaller tire do here?)
- less tendency to land nose wheel first

Are these really beneficial? Are there other "undocumented" reasons for this STC?

Hi Pat,

According to undocumented research done by unverified scientists, you will go slower as the smaller tire allows more air to pass through the cowl creating more cooling drag. Frankly the supposed benefits wound not justify losing any speed for me.

The airspeed loss with smaller tire is on the PA-24, I believe on the 180s. On the PA 30 the nose gear is totally enclosed when retracted, there is no loss of speed.

Without being argumentative, from the question posed by Pat it appears to me he was asking about using the 5'' tire on a single. Although there are 2 more cylinders under the cowl, if the smaller tire slows down a 180, my guess is that it would slow down a 260 as well as neither has a fully enclosed nosegear.

Not being augmentative Don. The original post asks specifically about a PA-30. There are pluses and minuses to the smaller nose wheel, but on a PA-30, speed isn't one of them.
