Air pressure in tires and struts

Air pressure in tires and struts

Postby Michael » Tue Mar 09, 2010 6:33 am

I was noticing that a friend with a PA24-250 has his struts pumped way up compared to mine. I asked him and he says he inflates his so his struts are pretty hard. What is the range for inflation on struts? How many PSI are the tires inflated? He has Goodyear Flight Customs III's and I looked at them and I could not locate an inflation pressure. Is there any advantage to having the struts all pumped up? Disadvantages?

Proper inflation is 2.75" on all struts. Tire pressure is found in the POH and varies by model aircraft, not by tire. 250's should be 25 nose and 35 mains IIRC. Not looking at the tech docs right now.

Hydraulic Fluid, Ruby Red

Postby Michael » Thu Mar 18, 2010 3:05 pm

I purchased some hydraulic fluid from A/C Spruce for my up coming maintainace (annual). I am determined to have Ruby Red fluid in my struts. I bought a gallon of the 5606 Aeroshell and was really surprised to see that this fluid came in a very large can. I thought I would get a resealable container. I wonder if I can transfer the fluid over to a plastic container without contaminating the fluid?

No problem as long as the new container is clean and dry. Once you open the big can, transfer the fluid to something with a tight lid so that you don't get moisture contamination. I keep a couple of pump oil cans full for use to fill reservoirs. I also use an old metal gallon paint stripper can that has been fully decontaminated as a storage can (relabled of course).
