Hi Scott: I recently had a similar problem, and it turned out to be the gyro. Depending on the age of your gyro...and the updates that have been done....my quotes were $3500 and up for an overhauled gyro. New was over $5000. The Sandel that Zach mentioned was over $5000 and had some other installation complications that were going to bump the price up even more.

At those prices I started thinking Aspen and replacing the gyro and the HSI panel instrument, but it was during the busy season when I needed the airplane and my experience with radio/panel changes has been they always take lots more time than anticipated. I also had some concerns about abandoning the steam gages that I have looked at for so long.

I fortunately came across a used replacement KG102 for $1000.
It had all the updates and a 30 day "buy and try". I decided to take a chance on it. So far it has been perfect.

Bottom line.....if you want an excuse to install a glass panel, you have it.

i wish there were more where that unit came from...



i am in the same situation - our KG102 is slowly dying, and an overhaul at TGH is 1700$ + whatever else they find wrong (translate that into $2500 or more). one option i was considering is the sandel SG102 AHRS for $4000 which is completely solid state, which i'm pretty sure we won't be rebuilding anytime soon. it's supposed to be plug compatible - does anyone here have any experience with this unit?

I found the KG102 on Ebay. I contacted the seller, who was a FBO, before bidding and felt some comfort about the condition of the unit.
He offered a 30 day return if I didn't like it.

PS: When I was considering the Sandel as a replacement, my shop commented that they take longer to fire up. Don't know anything more than that, but you might want to explore further. AHP

Hi Scott,

From the way I read your first post it seems that the Gyro is working but it is 180 degrees out of phase with the correct heading when slaved. That indicates to me a problem with your flux valve, or possibly a problem with the 400 Hz AC that is used to provide the heading reference signal.

I haven't heard good reports on the SG102, some operators have gone back to the KG102. Sandel might might have them sorted now but there were problems about 12 months ago.
