Oil Useage

Oil Useage

Postby 17031 » Mon Aug 10, 2009 1:30 am

I have a '67 260B. I'm using about 1qt of oil every 4 or 5 hours. What is considered normal? What are others getting? I have about 1300 hours on the engine.

Tim: That sounds normal. I burn about the same ........ a qt every 4 hours. As I recall the O-540 engine manual says that .33 qt/hour is a normal burn.

Oil burn depends on age of engine, whether you have chrome cylinders, and how full you keep the sump. On low time six cylinder engines with steel cylinders, I would expect to get 10 hours on a quart.

Tim,

I have different engines in my 39 but find that the consumption also varies based on cross country vs pratice approaches and pattern work (lower hours per qt).

Also, if I keep the oil at 6ish, better consumption than if it is topped at max capacity of 8. Since 2 is the minimum, all is still well in-range.

FYI. I get 15-25 hours per quart on 160hp IO320s 361 hours SMOH.

Your oil consumption would be well within the normal range. At 1500 SMOH it's about what I'd expect to see. What you need to be concerned about are sudden changes in oil consumption. It you went from 15 hrs/qt to 5 hrs/qt over just a few months I'd be concerned. If it's stable at that number I wouldn't worry a bit.
