Digital Tach: WTB

Digital Tach: WTB

Postby Patrick Arnold » Mon Jul 20, 2009 5:17 pm

Hi Folks,

While I'm restoring my firewall it has dawned on me this is a perfect time to get that old tach cable out of the way and go with a nice digital tach in the panel.

Consumer Aviation recently ran a review of these 3 units; curious whether anyone has one and what your experiences have been:

1. Electronics International’s R-1
2. UMA Instruments
3. Horizon Instruments P-1000

Both the EI and Horizon units will let you know if you have mag issues although the Horizon seems to have a few more features in this area. The EI is 2.5" round while the Horizon is 3 1/8". It can also be panned 7 deg which seems like it may be nice in a Comanche. The UMA provides an analog needle display although it is electronically derived.

Any thoughts and/or experiences from anyone?

Thanks,

Pat Arnold

Pat... I loved the Horizon in my 260... I had it after the original tach went Tango Uniform... My IA was of the old school and he was a bit guarded in his initial evaluation... 2x I had mag failures in flight and the Horizon told me both times.

I have a bad cable on my Twinco with a noticeable kink in it... when it goes (not if... probably a matter of time) I will install 2 Horizons, unless I can afford Jeff's JPI 960 set up.

All the best!
Jim
