NEW PROP RECOMMENDATIONS

NEW PROP RECOMMENDATIONS

Postby Nathan Dudley » Fri Jul 10, 2009 12:21 am

I'm in the midst of an annual. 500 hr. inspection AD on prop done. Bad news! $7000 to fix prop. Would rather spend on new prop.

What would you recommend?
Where can I find the best deal?
Are there any other solutions? Perhaps a place to get a good rebuilt prop.

This is for a 1960 PA 24-250. O-540 A1D5

Thanks for any advice you can give on this major decision I must make.

Choice is really between a Hartzell 3 bld, and a MacCauley 3 bld. Personal preference on which manufaturer to go with. Both are good props. MacCauley has had no ADs on their props...and the design is just better IMHO, but the 3 bld Hartzell may be a bit smoother running (from those that have flown both).

I got the Blac Mac for about $7000 as I recall from Colorado Propeller. This was when the Blac Mac first game out. Great prop. No problems.

Hmmm... 3-bl vs 2-bl. Personally, given a choice, I'd go with 2. A little faster, I think, and one less blade to maintain, same prop diameter (ground clearance), AFAIK.

But... The 3-bl Mac sure looks good on the ramp :)
