Oshkosh 2009 AirVenture

Postby Scott Ducey » Tue May 05, 2009 5:13 pm

I received my Comanche Flyer this month and saw an update on the mass arrival. I know the mass arrival is on Sunday, July 26th in the am, however Oshkosh does not begin until the next day. If we arrive on Sunday morning, is anything open at that point? I did not attend last year and wanted to know. So that is my first question.

My next question: While I am considering attending the mass arrival, I am also thinking about getting to Oshkosh beforehand to take pictures of the arrival with a video cam and stills. Is there any way I can get there earlier (before the mass arrival) and take pics? Specifically, can I get close access to the runway to take high def video of the arriving Comanche's without the linemen chasing me away?

Hi Scott,
There is no problem about showing up early at Oshkosh. I'm sure if you get there early and explain to the line crew what you are doing they will get you a spot reasonably close so you can take pictures. They have safety rules they have to follow but will usually try to be helpful where possible. 8)

My June issue of the EAA Vintage Airplane mag has a blurb titled "Aicraft Groups to Gather for Oshkosh Journey", on page 5. It talks about peole coming early to see these mass arrivals, which this year will start on Friday at 10 AM with the Cessna 159/152's.
Saturday has the Bonanzas at 1; Cessnas at 2:30; and Mooneys at 4.

Sunday starts with COMANCHES at 11:30 followed by Vans RVs at 1:30.
BTW, in the telling of this, they featured the photo of last years COMANCHES taxiing in!

See you all there again this year.

Dave or Don: Do you have any indication of the number of Comanches planning to make this year's mass fly in?

Hey Al - I think Zach told me that there were around 30 airplanes committed at this point, but I could be wrong. I hope there is a good turnout. I am hoping to take a lot of Comanche pictures.

I hope to see you there. For what it is worth, me and a few friends are going to stop at Beaver Island in Michigan on Friday/Saturday. We are planning to arrive in Watertown Saturday late afternoon. If you are making reservations at the Holiday Inn at Watertown, you may want to mention ICS as they have set aside a block of rooms for us. If you don't, they are already booked up.

Scott,
Where's Beaver Island?
Shirley and I will be in Traverse City on Friday, deciding whether to overnite there, or go on to Watertown.

Thats great. Hope you can join us. Beaver Island is north of Traverse City. Looks like a short hop. I believe we are landing at the airport that is on the north side of the island which is 6Y8. I am staying at Beaver Island Resort. We are going to be there for part of Friday and then part of Saturday. Then we are heading for Watertown later in the afternoon. Either way, I look forward to seeing you at Watertown or Beaver Island.

BTW - we were just at Traverse City a few weeks ago for a marathon. I am told they are known for their cherry creations, namely pies.

Are there any scheduled forums, parties, picnics, square dances, meetings, etc?
