Owner-Assisted Annuals

Owner-Assisted Annuals

Postby Greg Farris » Fri Mar 06, 2009 4:27 am

My annual is coming up this month, my second on N8902P 260B and want to try owner-assisted. Mostly for learning experience, i would be consider a very basic backyard mechanic (old VW, etc.). I am looking for suggestions on how to educate my self before i tackle the annual. Books, Piper Manual, whatever....

You should become familiar with the Service Manual for your airplane, and have a Parts Manual to identify those items that might need replacement.

Finally, your mechanic needs to have some patience to assist you.

The annual fee that he charges might actually be greater, depending on how much extra time that will be charged for the "education".

The payoff will come later when you can undertake some of the tasks without his assistance.

Section III of my Twin's Service Manual deals with Maintenance.

My 260B is due for an annual and I would like to do an owner-assisted one.

The mechanics I have used in the past don't do owner-assisted annuals. I am looking for a recommendation from my fellow ICS members. I'm seeking a mechanic who

- charges a reasonable hourly rate
- will turn my airplane around pretty quickly (want it back in less than 4 weeks)
- will let me and my buddy come assist
- has worked on Comanches before and really impressed one of you with his work
- is located in the Northeast (PA, NJ, NY, CT, RI, or MA)

If you can recommend someone, please reply here or contact me directly at either malcolm@malcolm.cc or 203-698-2600

Thanks!
