Tip tanks removal procedure

Postby Effie Andree Wiltens » Sun Jan 18, 2009 2:40 pm

Our port landing light is U/S and needs replacing.
It looked like a simple job to unscrew the tip tank fasteners, we presumed they were the self-tailing type.

Alas, the three of them we tried turn but do not come out -- it is as if they are not self-tailing or have come loose...

Time to stop and reflect. I don't like to make assumptions at this time, much less ressort to brute force before knowing what's going on.

Can anyone untangle the mystery for us?

Tip tank removal

Effie, the installation instructions show a combination of machine screws and nut plates, plus some sheet metal screws.

In order for you to know which are installed where, I have scanned the page from the manual

Jim,

My practice with the tip tanks is to get up to cruise, get my power set, and then I switch to the tips. I will run those near out, or out if I really want to check the fuel burn, such as when I am planning to fly out to the limit of endurance. It is a good double check on the fuel totalizer.

When I run a tank dry, switching the tank and turning the boost pump on is all that is necessary to get the engine to quit surging and settle back down. As I don't have a turbo, I don't worry overly about shock cooling, though I would try to avoid it in the winter in the upper midwest.
