Engine Overhaul: Factory? Carbureted vs. Injected?

Rich- "Point taken"... and a good one at that.
I did a little research on turbocharging the thing, and it's a less appealing option at every corner I round.

I'm resolved to simply replace this engine with a nice Lycoming factory rebuilt engine.
The fellow I spoke with at Airpower told me that my 47 year old engine is no longer eligible for factory "overhaul", and whether or not he's accurate on that one, I like the rebuilt option due to a few particulars such as the zero-time logbook, and warranty, etc.
So the "smart" thing to do (I think) is to do a nice firewall-forward refurb with an all-but brand spanking new engine. I'll probably get some gap seals installed and a few other small things that I've been wanting to do.

November is my current target-month for this little maintenance evolution. I'll keep folks posted and hopefully come up with some nice pics to post.
More thoughts and comments are welcome for sure though!

OK, OK... "chrome is for sissies" :lol: Besides- I haven't run across a nice lexan cowling....
(I'll just get some cool neon lighting to put up under the cowling... maybe some around the gear-wells....oh yeah! and a big sub-woofer so I can pull up to the parking area with a "thump-thump"!!! :lol: :wink: )

Seriously (and expensively!): I'm going to go ahead with the factory reman. Also, I've decided to replace the cowling entirely. Mine has numerous cracks, dings, wallered-out holes, drill-stops, "band-aids", etc. And, every time we take it off, it just seems even worse-off for it. Yeah, I could fix it I suppose... But what fun would that be?
Dave Pratt's Eagle cowling and exhaust is the ticket I think. As pricey as it is, I doubt I'd be doing it "all by itself", but like I said before: ...it's easy to just keep peeling-off dollars when the whole wad is out of your pocket eh? (sheeesh...I'm going to have to ask my therapist if there's real pathology here!! :roll: )
Anyway, I like the looks of the Eagle cowl, and I've seen one here in Altus that I had the opportunity to inspect, including opening it up and all that. Do I buy into all the performance claims? Hmmmm....I guess I'll find out won't I?

The plan is to go ahead and change the engine out in late October (provided it's available by then). In the meantime I'll order the exhaust kit and install it here before making the trip to APP for the cowling.
I plan on refurbishing the firewall and everything forward. While I don't like the idea of putting old scat tubes and baffling back on, etc... that's the way it will go I think, as APP will be installing most of that stuff during the cowl installation.

I'll be sending out the engine mount bracket for inspection and powder coating. Should I go with Witt PC or Kosola?

Any opinions on starters? My first choice so far is the SkyTec NL model.

Of course I'll be putting on new Lord engine mounts.

I am wondering about firewall blanket material. While my first inclination is to go with some as "bright and shiny" as possible, I'd like to get your opinions on what actually works best over time.

The fuel pumps will get replaced.

Any more input as to how this evolution should go is greatly appreciated. Of course I'd like to here more from folks who have actually done it! (No offense!)

I promise to post pics and report progress when we actually "put the keys up" and start work!

Chris, Kosola did a great job on my pa39 engine brackets and I highly recommend them.

I'm also very happy with my SkyTec starters.

Remember to torque those lord mounts to spec.

Chris: Looking at doing the same to my '63 Comanche 250 in about 4 years. Would be interestes in what air power is costing you for the reman. Just to get a base line figure. Shoot me an email if you get a chance.

Well, the engine has been ordered. (as of about 2 weeks ago) While Airpower originally said "7-9 weeks", it's looking more like 9-11 weeks from the order date. I hope that estimate doesn't sprout legs! It's looking like mid November.
Financing through Airpower was pretty straightforward, and the interest was competitive. They offered up to 15 years for my loan amount.

We plan on taking the plane out of service the last week of October to begin the firewall-forward refurbishment and all that goes with it. If all goes reasonably well, we'll be flying the "new engine" down to APP for a new Eagle cowling by the end of November.
*If anyone lives in that area and would be interested in giving me a lift from the Melbourne, FL area to Destin, FL- I'd be happy to buy gas! Heck, I'll even super-size your meal! :wink:

I'll post pictures and stuff when we start tearing stuff apart...

As always, I'm soliciting any good advice or experience!

Chris, Take $499 and immediately attend the Mike Busch Savvy Aviator's seminar before spending another penny on your Comanche.

You will save many times the cost of the seminar every year for the rest of your flying career.

I would have recommended doing this before ordering your new engine but didn't get too you in time.
