Hot starting Lycoming engines is an art, not a science.

If the shut down has been less than five minutes, as it might be when I have just stopped at the pumps for gas, Maggie will usually start just by cracking the throttles and spinning the engines. No prime what so ever. If it has been longer, then I try a quick blip of the boost pump just to push the vapor out. When that doesn't work, I go to Zach's plan, which is to flood the engine so you have a known point.

In my experience, each airplane is a bit different, but eventually you will figure out what your airplane wants.

2 kinds of poppin' goin' on. Important to know which you got.
Sharp pops while idling(backfire) is too lean so enrichen the idle mixture.
Soft pops while idling, or especially while at idle on the landing,(afterfire, or ignition of raw fuel in the exhaust stacks) is too rich, so lean out the idle mixture a bit.
Backfire is being used in the discussion as either lean or rich, but a backfire comes back thru the induction system and indicates a lean condition and gives a much sharper pop than a softer afterfire from being too rich.
