new glass

I'm in the process of replacing all the glass in my PA30. any suggestions which manufacture to order from. LP seem to have the best prices. any one ever tried to do it themselves. if so what problems to expect.

The windows in our PA30 were replaced with windows from Cee Bailey before we bought it. They are good though I don't know what they were like to fit.

There are different options with regard to the thickness of the glass. The thicker options give better noise proofing but may require more work to trim to fit.

Have you looked at the Great Lakes Aero Products, they advertise in the "Flyer"?

No matter who you buy off the windows will probably need trimming partularly the windscreen. Aircraft are "hand built" and each airframe is not an exact match. Because of this the window manufacturer needs to make his product oversize to ensure it will fit any aircraft. Any excess needs to be trimmed.

I don't know what your skills are but I think you may need to do some rivetting for the windscreen, though it may all be screws. The job can be fiddly but if you have some mechanical experience you should be able to do it yourself.

Thanks for the info Alan. I am an A&P but have never installed any windows. helped with a Apache once and it needed a lot of trimming. didnt know if they had improved them since. havent made up my mind if im going to install a one piece or replace with the two piece. thanks again for any help.

When replacing the side windows, you have the option of recessing the plexi a small amount so that the outer surface is flush with the skin. It is a lot of work, but the results are nice.

secure the window to the skin and use a grease pencil to mark the outer mold line. Then, very carefully, use a router to reduce the plexi thickness about .060" all around.

As I recall, we used vinyl tape on the both sides and the 3M flexible putty for the final installation.

The windshield will require lots of fit & trim. At the lower aft corners, some reduction in thickness is usually required to fit into the slot. The screwed on molding around the base of the windshield has to be re-fit, and usually looks bad. Consider adding the K2U cowler. It looks nice.

Sounds like an awful lot of work. is the one piece windshield that much better over the standard two piece. also which manufacture do you suggest is the better of the three. im leaning toward LP Aero but know nothing about either. thanks for your help and info.

Great Lakes Aero is awfully good... Kristin just used them for her windshield.. and she lives in Kal-i-for-ni-a... so it should work for your neck of the woods... they give a Comanche ICS discount...
