Alternator upgrade on Comanche 180

Alternator upgrade on Comanche 180

Postby Warren Janzen » Wed Jul 02, 2014 3:37 am

There seem to be several brands available for upgrading from a generator to a alternator on a 180. Which kit would be the best? I want to some newer avionics down the road. Would like to use the lights more but concerned with running the battery down at low RPM's. Thanks.

We went with Plane Power. To make full use of it's output, we upgraded the cables and circuit breaker. Bogart sells cable kits or you can have your own made.

We are very happy with the installation.

When I first bought my 250 I ran the battery dead on a long taxi route at night with landing lights on. I immediately went to a Plane Power alternator, Bogert copper battery cables with battery box mod, and Whelen LED taxi and landing lights and LED nav lights. My current draw is almost nil now with the LED stuff, the engine starts much faster, and I don't worry about running the battery dead!

I have installed the plane power kit a couple of times now. Once you figure out the old wiring vs what needs to be new, it is simple and straight forward. Good quality and reliable kit,
