Identify Air / Oil Separator?

Identify Air / Oil Separator?

Postby Jim Worley » Tue Feb 05, 2013 12:45 am

Can anyone identify the object that is in the circle. I believe it to be an air / oil separator of some origin. Is it factory? I am unable to find it in the parts or mx manual. If it's not factory, does anyone know a brand? Thanks in advance for the help.

It looks like a home built oil/air separator. I don't know what else it could be. The wide rubber hose angling down from an unseen place suggests that it is a hose from the breather.

An old time mechanic once suggested to me that running the end of the breather hose that runs to the bottom of the fire wall into a soda can mounted on the firewall would keep a lot of the condensed oil off the belly. He said to be certain the the hole in the can around the breather tube was large enough so the the breather tube was not restricted by back pressure. I opted for an air-oil separator instead. He did caution me to remove the soda can when taking the airplane for its annual inspection.

Perhaps this is what you see. It looks a lot like an old oil container to me.
