For very cold starts I used to use something like this: Pull the prop through 6-8 blades. 4 full shots of prime. Pull through 6-8 or more blades. 4 more shots of prime one pump on the throttle then crank with the carb heat on and the primer open. The goal in all tthis is to get some fuel to vaporize then get the engine to start quickly and stay running. A failed start can ice the plugs at which point the game is over. To keep it running work the primer slowly and on the back stroke of the primer pump the throttle in and out about 3/4" to tickle the accelerator pump. Once sustained operation is assured close the primer and carb heat and run as slow as possible for 7-10 minutes before going to higher RPM to taxi. Chartlie Melot escapee from the north
