Alan,
I too wanted to invest in the factory reman but it was unavailable for my plane. When I talked to Air Power they told me that Lycoming has a 36 year rule in effect now. If your engine is 36 years old or older they will no longer take it in trade. They did offer to rebuild mine. With that in mind I elected for an overhaul to new limits with new cylinders from Custom Airmotive. They quoted $24,000 with all new accessories but I had everything but the engine done last year so they deducted $2,500 for the accessories and now looking at $21,500.

Dan: OOppss. I'll have to look at the logbooks but that may have to be my option also. Particulary since I don't plan on doing anything for 4-5 years.

Unlike TCM, which has had many issues with it's cylinders, Lycoming seems to produce a quality product. If I were replacing the cylinders on my Lycoming engine I'd use Lycoming cylinders. The only exception would be very low utilization aircraft. Because of possible corrosion issues I'd use ECI Cermanil plated cylinders. I'd also recommend the use of ASL CamGuard to protect the cam and lifters from corrosion.

I don't believe I would OH a 15 year old 400 hour engine unless there were other issues from oil analysis, screen checks, low compression or leaking oil.
