Don:
I have a '63 Comanche 250 with a O-540-A-D5. My engine has just about 1800 hours and I just had to replace a cylinder. My engine was surging a bit at warm up and so I took the plane to my shop. They found that the gasket between the carburator and case was going bad so I needed a new kit for that. They also found that one cylinder was at 48 on a compression check. We took that cylinder off to have it reworked and replace the broken rings. Did not pass the test. So now I had to find a reworked cylinder.
The point to this is that my local enginge shop did not have any narrow deck cores. A few weeks later while on a layover I was looking at Van Bortal's engine page. They did have new cylinders for about a grand. Trying to nurse my engine for a few more hundred hours. Point being is that narrow deck cylinders are getting hard to find. I did get a quoate several months ago for a new reman enginge from them and that was around $29,000 and some change.
My current engine is a G&N engine overhaull that was last done around mid 1980. So my plan in a year or two is to put in a Lycoming Factory Reman and go from there. Hopefully this give you another data point.
Finally get my airplane back when I get home from this trip at the end of the week. Ironacally I then have to fly it to WEBCO for an annual and tail inspection. Not much flying getting done this summer.
Sincerely Alan
