Starter Solenoid

Starter Solenoid

Postby Scott Grand » Thu Mar 17, 2011 2:49 am

I need to replace my starter solenoid on my 1965 PA-24-260. Webco sent me a new solenoid, which is Piper part # 602-850. This is listed as a replacement for original Piper part# 487-149. The problem is my old solenoid (which does not have a Piper part#) says its 12V DC. The solenoid I received is 6V DC. According to the paperwork, the old Piper part 487-149 is also 6V DC. I know I have 12V at power supply to the solenoid (checked with a digital multi-meter). I am confused on what to do here.

Hi Scott,

This is a total WAG, but a solenoid doesn't know what voltage it is receiving and doesn't for the most part care. All the Comanches were/are 12v but the automobile from which the solenoids were sourced from were 6v up to 1955 or so. My guess would be you have a very old NOS. Best place to go is back to Webco and ask Bob or John.

Good luck, Don

I have seen a lot of solenoids on a lot of 12V Pipers that were marked as 6V. Install it and test it. If it works, you are good to go.
