PA-30 Vacuum pump mounting orientation

PA-30 Vacuum pump mounting orientation

Postby Gomer Pound » Mon Jul 18, 2016 3:22 am

Hi, the left RAPCO vacuum pump intake hose is rubbing on the top of left engine mount so it has rubbed through the powder coat. The right engine vacuum pump was replaced after the overhauls (both 1250 hrs ago). The prior owner mounted the vacuum pump rotated 90 degrees clockwise so the intake hose is not riding over the engine mount. IS there a "correct" orientation for the vacuum pumps? The left vacuum pump is mounted so the word "IN" is visible at the top right corner. The right vacuum pump must be rotated so the "IN" is now on the right lower corner (facing from back of the engine forward).
I obtained the RAPCO vacuum pump wrench and a new gasket in anticipation of removing the left pump and rotating it 90 degrees. When I looked at the pump today there is NO way to loosen the left lower nut without removing the oil filter, and I am not certain if more will have to be removed after the oil filter is removed. It looks like the cable next to the oil filter might need to be disconnected also. Any ideas or tricks on this? I know this must be a common issue, just not to me!
Clear Skies,

I spoke with RAPCO and found the pump may be turned 90, 180, or 270 degrees and will work fine in terms of the holes.
