Aussie versus Piper Horn

I have a delima.
I purchased a new horn from Piper last year and planned to install it in a few weeks.
I am about ready to time out on the A/D so I need to move forward soon.

Now we have the Austrailian horn available.
Any thoughts?

I am having my Piper Horn installed right now. I had mine for a few months. I decided I did not want to delay 3 weeks for the Aus Horn to arrive, I already had the new Piper Parts and ten years is a good amount of time. I will probably buy the Aus horn if there is a group buy and keep it to install at a later date.

As I understand it the Aus Horn terminates the AD, but adds a 100hr inspection for the new Horn.

If I understand the situation correctly, installing the aussie horn will stop the repeated damage that is caused by the periodic dis-assembly of the tail for inspection of the inferior piper product. You will need to do 100 hr inspections which as I understand it is a visual inspection of the outside of the horn which can be accomplished by removing the right side inspection port immediately in front of the stabilator. If all this is true then it seems the aussie horn is a no brainer. What a sad statement on what piper has become.

I haven't seen the visual inspection protocol, but I doubt that a decent visual inspection can be made without pulling the tail cone. That probably increases the labor required to about an hour or so, if done outside the annual inspection. No additional when done with the annual. For most people, the Aussie horn is the better way to go. The more you fly in a year, the less the Aussie horn is a great solution as you are having to track and get done one more inspection that will come up a time or two before the annual is due.

if any one is interested, I am about to send off for an Aussie horn, as I am due for annual end of September. My service bulletin compliance time (5 years) is up shortly, so I need to do something at annual. I have made the decision to go with Aussie so I have a terminating action, and I don't typically go over 100 hours per year anyway, so the 100 inspection is not an issue.

Don't believe there will be a large savings aside from combined freight, but thought I would check.

Hi Kris,

I believe there is already in place another 100 hr inspection, for the singles at least, which I believe might be the rudder spar (?). I agree the tail cone needs to come off but if one follows the tip of talking it off in one piece, that is not too bad.

The fin spar requires removal of the fairing at the front base of the vertical fin.

That is true, my point was that if you have to bring the aircraft in for one 100 hr inspection it is not as big a deal to bring it in for two,etc.
