Gear Warning Horn

Gear Warning Horn

Postby Rick Newnum » Tue Feb 28, 2017 7:40 pm

Hello everyone, first post so I hope I do this right.... :)

During the last flight with my 1959 250, the gear warning horn would not shut off. After takeoff with full throttle, even after the gear is completely up (confirmed by green light and emergency gear handle travel), and then leveling off at cruise, the gear warning horn continued. I pulled the throttle back, got well below 125mph, and lowered the gear. The horn stopped as it should.

I then raised the gear and went back to cruise settings and the horn would not shut off. It did not matter the throttle setting. As I made minor adjustments at altitude with the throttle, the horn finally stopped. As I descended from altitude the horn came on as it should. But what was odd, all I had to do was literally touch the throttle control and the horn would turn off. Release the control and the horn would sound. Once again, when gear was down and confirmed, the horn stopped as it should.

Any thoughts? Simple fix or not...

Thanks,

Rick,
You have a bad switch or a short. If the gear horn doesnt come on with the gear up and throttle closed, then you have a bad nose down limit switch or bad wiring, if it comes on with the gear up and the throttle closed, that is normal. If it stays on when the throttle is not closed, that is most probably the throttle microswitch is bad or mis-adjusted. Additionally if you have a flap position switch in the system (gear alert light on panel), it could have gone bad as well. I often see these so soaked in oil and solvent its a wonder more aren't bad.
