I have a TKM MX 12 in my '59 180. The reception began to cut out during flight (didn't check if I lost transmit also). In correspondence with Bevan-Rabell, they suggested checking the connectors before sending the radio in for repair. Sure enough, the radio connectors had loose pins and pin slots. There is also a jumper plug that that replaced the original tube power supply. My IA said the connector the jumper is plugged into is cracked, and cannot be replaced. Mine is located behind the panel, above the circuit breakers. Has anyone else experienced this cracked connector problem, and is it true it cannot be replaced?

Welcome to Comanche ownership and the ICS Forum.

I haven't had the exact problem you mention but did have similar issues with a very old DME, nearly original to the 1970 Twin. The internal part of the unit was fine but the connections had deteriorated over time as you described due to vibration and the heat of Texas on the plastic parts. I have to say it sounds a bit unusual that a connector cannot be replaced but then with older parts and retrofitting, that can happen.

If the IA says this is a Comanche part, the part number would be in the manual on this website at

I've had some success at googling the Piper part number and finding the part.

Don't know if it would be helpful but the maintenance manual for the MX12 is downloadable from here

I have found over time that IAs have varying skill levels on various topics. The shop I use regularly raises their hand on avionics issues and suggests I take the plane to an avionics shop. Can't tell if this is one of the situations or not.

Thanks for the reply. Perhaps you are right, and the IA meant HE couldn't replace it. It was difficult for him to even get to the connector. I'll look through the two manuals for some clues.

I was at an avionics shop, at least I thought I was since it was "[***] Avionics". Fortunately, there are two others close-by.
